Every week we feature a creator who is actively using Brkaway to manage their content business and is crushing it in the creator space! This week we met with Emily.
Emily is a creator based in Ottawa, Ontario who produces content for DTC brands in industries such as skincare, home goods, and lifestyle — as long as they fit in her suitcase! Emily is not only a creator herself, she’s also the Founder of her own agency, Seven to Sunday. In this article, Emily shares how she’s successfully built her dream life — being able to travel and create full-time. She also shares a ton of helpful advice for creators who are just getting started. Get to know Emily more:
Introduce yourself!
I am an Ottawa-based Creative Director, but also work and travel internationally for a good chunk of the year. I work on all sorts of projects but I mostly stick to DTC brands in industries that you can find in your home (or fit in my suitcase) such as skincare, home goods, style, and a small niche I have is working with cabins. I would say my style is minimal with a Scandinavian feel, and that is reflected in my work.
Why did you become a creator?
I was always creating on the side, or had some sort of side hustle going but in 2021 I went full-time as a freelancer in the social media marketing world. I have been trying to work for myself for years, and I think everything just happened at the right time and I haven't looked back since. My partner is a photographer and typically has winters off, so it's the perfect duo for us to be able to travel together as well, which is something we have been working towards for a while.
What is your favourite part about being a creator?
Making my living by being creative and having the flexibility and freedom to go anywhere!
What does a typical content day look like for you?
First of all, it's definitely a priority to plan content days around hair wash day haha. I will then go in to plan the day for what clients have certain due dates, and figure out what footage I already have or need. Since I work with clients in various industries it's not as easy to get a lot done in one shot. It's a lot of planning around weather, different spaces and locations, outfit changes, etc. Since I travel quite a bit too, there is a lot of planning that goes into that — I won't lie, it can be chaotic at times!
Do you have any advice/pointers for new creators?
Yes! I‘ve been behind a ton of brand accounts with large followings, and I’ve received a lot of requests from UGC Creators and Influencers, big and small. My best tips for sliding into your dream brand's DMs:
- Make your DM feel genuine! Add in a comment about a recent launch or something you’ve noticed to show you’re paying attention and it isn’t a copy/paste message.
- Keep it simple, max 3-4 sentences we don't need all of your stats.
- Make sure they can see your personal style on your IG and you aren't a private account.
- Sound like a human, not like a sales pitch.
- Tag the brand in the photo, don’t just mention them in the caption. I can promise you a lot of Social Media Managers are going through their tagged posts to find quality UGC.
Anything else you'd like to share about your creator journey to date?
I recently took a huge step in my business with a rebrand and I’m trying to grow my team. I always thought working for myself in a creative role was out of reach, but here I am. If you’re hoping to make this change you can do it!
