Introduce yourself!
Hi, I'm Kate! A small-town millennial mom/content creator. For 8 years I was a flight attendant but was craving more creative freedom, so I left that career to pursue running my Etsy shop full time. I quickly learned the importance of leveraging social media to build my small business, and now I work with brands world-wide crafting creative videos for them to use on their social pages. Face-to-camera content is my jam and I love telling a brand's story through my relatable nature! :)
Why did you become a creator?
I realized the opportunities the digital space / social media brings - not only how it helped grow my own small business immensely, but how I was able to do it from the comfort of my own home (vs. being away for work multiple nights in a row). I thrive off creative freedom!
What is your favourite part about being a creator?
Again, I want to say I love that it allows me to be home. I truly have the perfect blend of work / life balance with having a family, and I genuinely love the creative side of filming, editing, etc. I can't image doing anything else right now other than being a creator!
What does a typical content day look like for you?
Pure. Chaos. Haha, no but really, I am OCD on organization and even then sometimes life has other plans. With having a toddler, I structure my days to film while he is at daycare part-time, and I often do my concepts and admin work in the early mornings / night when he is asleep. No day is ever the same, and I like it that way!
Do you have any advice/pointers for new creators?
I've helped friends get started with being a creator and the common denominator as to why they usually stop doing it is two-fold: not enjoying the work itself and a lack of patience. I really think to thrive in any job/career, you have to love it. The "life" of a content creator can seem glamorous, fun and "easy" - but if someone isn't invested in constantly learning, growing and trying new things then they tend to inevitably stop trying. I'd also say PATIENCE is a key trait to have in this industry. It takes time to find your voice as a creator and it takes time to build yourself up professionally as a creator!
Anything else you'd like to share about your creator journey to date?
I love this! I often think if I didn't have kid(s) that I'd be a more "successful" creator - booking more gigs, have more time to dedicate to my work, but what I'm really passionate about sharing now is that having a job you LOVE and having a life you LOVE can exist together. I love that being a creator gives me the freedom to do something I enjoy, help people grow their businesses, while also letting me grow with my family. It makes me emotional! It's a career that allows you to take things into your own hands, your workload into your own hands. That's my motivation to continue doing this - I found my little spot in the creator world and I'm really happy :)
